Trail Crews in the Field

Field season has officially begun now that GMC trail crews are in the field. Our two crews have settled into their work sites and are getting started on this season’s projects, working hard to improve the trails with their trail building and rock work skills.

If you see a trail crew or caretaker on your hikes this summer, join us in wishing them a great season! Through the support of hikers like you, we can hire the skilled seasonal staff to care for our trails, shelters, and mountaintops all summer.

Blog: Caretaking with the Mountain

This week, we welcomed this season’s class of backcountry caretakers to the club as they started training before heading into the field. Soon, they’ll be out on the trail, where you’ll likely encounter a caretaker at backcountry overnight sites and popular summits.

In a nutshell, the job of a caretaker is to steward the shelters, trails, and ecosystems of the Long Trail and engage with and educate the trail’s hikers. But as former GMC caretaker Nathan Knutson shares in a new blog post, the caretaker experience includes so much more. Read Nathan’s reflection, linked in our bio, for his thoughts on what it means to be such a unique part of the Long Trail hiker’s experience and to “caretake WITH the mountain.”
