Completed Three-Year Burrows Trail Project
After 70 weeks of work over the past three years, the Green Mountain Club and the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation completed a top-to-bottom rehabilitation project of the Burrows Trail on Camel’s Hump! The Burrows Trail was built over 100 years ago, before modern sustainable trail design standards existed. It is one of the most traveled trails in the state. Extensive wear and tear from increased use and erosion prompted GMC and FPR to take the unprecedented approach of repairing the trail all at once, instead of dedicating only a few weeks of crew work at a time to sections of it like most trail projects.
Professionally skilled crews used mostly hand tools to repair and install hundreds of stone structures like staircases, check steps and waterbars, to improve drainage and keep hikers on the intended path. The large-scale investment is designed to help the trail withstand increasingly frequent and severe precipitation and intensified year-round use. The finished project improves the experience of hiking the Burrows Trail and ensures that hikers can continue to enjoy the trail for many more years to come!
