It’s important to be prepared for all kinds of conditions in the mountains when out hiking. This time of year, it’s important to carry with you extra layers and traction footwear, even if you don’t expect to need them! Keep in mind that conditions at higher elevations can be very different from the milder temperatures in the valleys and at trailheads, and weather is subject to quick changes. A headlamp is another important piece of gear to have on you for the shortening daylight hours. And now that the field season has wrapped up, popular summits and overnight sites aren’t staffed with backcountry caretakers to contribute any extra assistance.
